Can I Get Elderly Care Training from HK Government?

Pilot Scheme on Training for Foreign Domestic Helpers in Elderly Care.

If you are a Foreign Domestic Helper (FDH) in Hong Kong and take care of an elderly person, you may be eligible for free elderly care training under the government's Pilot Scheme on Training for Foreign Domestic Helpers in Elderly Care. This training, provided by the Social Welfare Department (SWD) in collaboration with the Department of Health (DH) and District Elderly Community Centres (DECCs), helps you improve your skills in caring for frail elderly persons.

1. Who Can Join the Training?

To join, you must:
✅ Be an FDH currently or soon-to-be taking care of an elderly person.
✅ Have your employer’s recommendation or permission.
✅ Ensure your employer provides statutory employees’ compensation insurance.

2. What Will You Learn?

The training consists of 8 core modules (12 hours total) and 4 elective modules (1-2 hours each).

🔹 Core Modules (Compulsory):

  • Assisting elderly persons with feeding and taking medicines
  • Fall prevention
  • First aid
  • Food hygiene and healthy meal arrangements for elderly persons
  • Mental health in elderly persons and detection of warning signs
  • Bathing and oral care for elderly persons
  • Vital signs observation and skills in measuring blood pressure, body temperature and blood sugar
  • Assisting elderly persons with mild mobility impairment in transferring positions

🔹 Elective Modules (Optional):

  • Meal arrangements for elderly persons with dementia
  • Communicating with elderly persons with dementia
  • Managing behavioural and psychological problems in elderly persons with dementia
  • Caring for elderly persons with stroke
The training is conducted by qualified professionals, such as nurses, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, and dieticians.

3. What Language Is the Training In?

The training is available in Cantonese or English. If needed, interpretation services are provided in:
🌏 Tagalog
🌏 Bahasa Indonesia
🌏 Thai
Training materials are also available in these languages.

4. How Much Does It Cost?

✅ The training is completely FREE.

5. How to Apply?

📌 Contact your nearest participating DECC (District Elderly Community Centre) to check class schedules and enroll.
